Cement & Concrete

OPC vs PPC Cement

The two cements used in most South Indian homes — and where each one wins.

  • OPC (43/53 grade) gains strength fast — good for RCC and fast-track work.
  • PPC blends fly ash — better long-term durability and resistance to coastal salts.
  • PPC is usually the safer pick for Chennai's humid, coastal conditions.

Our take: For most residential RCC we use 53-grade OPC for structure and PPC for masonry/plaster.

Cement & Concrete

Ready-Mix Concrete (RMC)

Batched concrete delivered to spec — consistency you can't get from site mixing.

  • Precise, lab-controlled mix design and water-cement ratio.
  • Faster pours with less wastage and cleaner sites.
  • Ideal for slabs, rafts and large structural pours.
Steel

TMT Steel Bars (Fe500 / Fe550D)

The reinforcement that holds your structure together — grade matters.

  • Fe500D / Fe550D offer high strength with ductility for seismic safety.
  • Look for corrosion-resistant (CRS) bars near the coast.
  • Always insist on branded, test-certified steel with mill reports.

Our take: We specify Fe550D from primary producers and verify mill test certificates on delivery.

Aggregates & Sand

M-Sand vs River Sand

Manufactured sand has largely replaced river sand — here's the trade-off.

  • M-Sand is consistent, legal and readily available; river sand is restricted.
  • M-Sand needs slightly more water/admixture for workability.
  • River sand gives smoother plaster finishes but supply is unreliable.

Our take: We use M-Sand for concrete and a controlled blend for plaster to balance finish and strength.

Aggregates & Sand

Coarse Aggregate (20mm / 40mm)

Crushed stone that gives concrete its bulk and strength.

  • 20mm is standard for most RCC; 40mm for mass concrete like footings.
  • Clean, well-graded, angular aggregate bonds best.
  • Flaky or dusty aggregate weakens the mix — quality control matters.
Masonry

AAC Blocks vs Red Bricks

Lightweight blocks vs traditional bricks for your walls.

  • AAC blocks are lighter, faster to lay and offer better thermal insulation.
  • Red bricks are time-tested and forgiving for chasing/fixings.
  • AAC reduces dead load — useful for upper floors and faster builds.

Our take: We often use AAC for non-load-bearing walls to cut weight and improve insulation.

Masonry

Fly Ash Bricks

An eco-friendly, dimensionally accurate alternative to clay bricks.

  • Uniform size means less mortar and neater plaster.
  • Lower water absorption and good compressive strength.
  • Greener — made from industrial fly ash.
Finishes

Vitrified vs Ceramic Tiles

The flooring decision that affects look, durability and budget.

  • Vitrified tiles are denser, harder and better for high-traffic floors.
  • Ceramic is cheaper and great for walls and low-traffic areas.
  • Double-charged / GVT vitrified suits living and common areas.
Waterproofing

  • Crystalline & chemical admixtures protect RCC from within.
  • Membrane / APP systems for terraces and wet areas.
  • Box-type waterproofing for bathrooms and sunken slabs.

Our take: We waterproof terraces, balconies and all wet areas as a standard, not an add-on.

Structural Systems

RCC vs PEB Structures

Choosing the right structural system for warehouses and large spans.

  • PEB (steel) is faster to erect and ideal for long clear spans.
  • RCC suits multi-storey, heavy-load and custom architectural forms.
  • PEB often wins on cost and speed for single-storey industrial sheds.

Our take: We advise PEB or RCC based on span, loads, future expansion and budget.

uPVC vs Aluminium Windows

Frames that affect insulation, maintenance and looks.

  • uPVC offers better thermal/sound insulation and low maintenance.
  • Aluminium gives slimmer profiles and a premium, modern look.
  • Both work well — the choice is finish, span and budget.

Plywood vs MDF (Joinery)

  • BWP/BWR plywood resists moisture — essential for kitchens and bathrooms.
  • MDF gives a smoother finish for painted/lacquered surfaces.
